InBC Invests in Arca Climate Technologies, Removing Carbon Dioxide from the Atmosphere

August 15, 2024

InBC has invested in Arca Climate Technologies Inc., a carbon dioxide (CO2) removal technology company transforming carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into rocks for permanent storage.

Started by a B.C.-based team of scientists and entrepreneurs with a desire to address climate change, Arca’s breakthrough technology significantly speeds up the natural process of carbon mineralization occurring in ultramafic rocks. The company is partnering with the critical minerals industry where ultramafic rock is abundant in the form of mine tailings.

“Arca is absolutely thrilled to be working with InBC. Our purpose is to stabilize the climate by capturing atmospheric CO2 and transforming into rock, where it is safely stored forever. This investment will help us continue to grow our team here in B.C. and build strategic partnerships with global producers of critical metals. With IP invented right here at the University of British Columbia, and this investment from InBC, Arca is another example of B.C.’s climate leadership.”

— Paul Needham, CEO, Arca Climate Technologies

Already removing CO2 at a large mining site, Arca is currently developing more partnerships with global producers of critical minerals that process billions of tonnes of material each year. By operating within existing industrial operations, Arca has a light footprint — requiring no additional lands or resources — while accessing unprecedented opportunity to potentially return billions of tonnes of atmospheric CO2 into the ground to help stabilize the climate.

In addition to the potential for financial returns, this investment aligns with InBC’s impact objective to drive climate action and is contributing to the province’s climate and clean energy goals. It is supporting innovative technology developed here in B.C. that has potential to generate large-scale impact across the globe.
