InBC has invested in Svante, a leading B.C. climate tech company that makes nanoengineered filters and modular carbon capture machines to trap and remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial emissions and the air.

Svante’s unique carbon capture and removal technology is comprised of filters coated in nanomaterials and housed inside rotary contactor machines for point source industrial carbon capture. The filters can also be used for direct air capture in which excess CO2 that has already been emitted is trapped and removed. The technology is more environmentally responsible than existing solutions; it’s also easier to manage, and scalable across industries such as pulp and paper, cement, steel, hydrogen, lime, oil and gas and more. Once the CO2 is captured, it can then be safely transported and stored more than three kilometres underground or used to make other products.

“We are delighted with this investment by InBC, which complements the $800 million CAD capital investment made in our company over the last decade by global corporate venture and private equity investors.”

— Claude Letourneau, President and CEO, Svante

Svante is focusing on heavy-emitting, hard-to-decarbonize industries, empowering them to significantly reduce their CO2 emissions advancing towards a net zero future. The company currently employs over 300 skilled professionals and technicians and is constructing a 141,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Burnaby, B.C., which will have the filter manufacturing capacity to capture 10 million tonnes of CO2 every year — equivalent to taking over 2.3 million gas-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year off the road. The latest investment from InBC will help to accelerate the delivery of carbon capture and removal projects domestically and abroad.

InBC invested in Svante following an investment by the Canada Growth Fund. This investment is supporting a strategic growth sector in B.C., increasing jobs and innovation in the province and driving measurable climate action.

InBC has invested in Mangrove Lithium, a lithium refining technology company helping to meet the increased global demand for sustainable critical minerals and supporting the energy transition to a net-zero future.

Mangrove’s patented lithium refining technology is more sustainable and cost-effective than existing technologies, producing a significantly smaller carbon footprint without any waste-byproducts. It can be applied across the battery-value chain, from lithium production to battery recycling and manufacturing. The company is helping to meet the increased global demand for sustainable critical minerals, decarbonizing the supply chain and supporting the energy transition to a net-zero future.

“Mangrove is committed to developing a local lithium supply chain. There was no better way to demonstrate this than working with InBC to build a first-of-a-kind lithium refining plant in Canada right here in our backyard. This investment is a critical step in ensuring North America has lithium refining capacity that can compete with the rest of the world. We are excited to partner with a B.C. organization who has a strong mandate centered around sustainability and mitigating climate change to help diversify B.C.’s economy.”

— Saad Dara, CEO, Mangrove Lithium

Based in Delta, B.C., Mangrove is committed to growing the lithium refining industry in Canada, decreasing our reliance on exporting ore abroad for refining and retaining more of the industry’s economic value here. With this investment, it is establishing a first-of-its-kind refining plant in B.C. and expanding its team, growing jobs in science, engineering, plant operations and business administration.

In addition to the potential for financial returns, this investment aligns with InBC’s impact objective to drive climate action and is supporting job growth, intellectual property and economic activity in B.C.

Last month, InBC announced our investment into Poseidon Ocean Systems, an aquaculture hardware technology company improving efficiencies and reducing the environmental impact of near-shore fish farming.

Poseidon’s complementary suite of industry-leading solutions includes its Trident Sea Cage and Life Support Systems. The Trident Sea Cage can withstand higher energy ocean environments and supports barrier technologies to reduce interactions between wild and farmed salmon, preventing sea lice and other diseases. The Life Support System promotes fish survival and growth. Used separately or integrated together, these innovations are enabling salmon farmers to improve fish health and mortality rates, increase yields and significantly reduce emissions and energy costs.

“Our mission is to develop advanced integrated aquaculture technology to improve sea farm sustainability, productivity and performance in the face of changing ocean conditions. It’s excellent to have an investor that understands and supports our focus on sustainability, climate resilience and fish welfare, and who can help foster our R&D and manufacturing growth (headquartered in Campbell River, B.C.), and in turn the global export of our technology.”

— Jamie Gaskill, CEO, Poseidon Ocean Systems

Poseidon’s novel technologies are being used at fish farms in Canada and across South America and Europe. In British Columbia (B.C.), Mowi Canada West’s Monday Rock farm off Vancouver Island has installed Poseidon hardware to reduce interactions between wild and farmed salmon and avoid threats such as plankton blooms, hypoxia and sea lice. In 2022, Cermaq Canada reported cutting over 76,000 kg. of carbon emissions in a year — a 60% reduction — during a trial of Poseidon’s aeration technology at two of its B.C. farms.

The aquaculture industry plays an important role in B.C.’s economy as well as our food security, especially during the current increased demand for sustainable protein. Headquartered in Campbell River, Poseidon is supporting quality jobs on northern Vancouver Island — including in engineering, design, development and more — while improving the productivity and sustainability of fish farms here and across the world.

InBC invested in Poseidon Ocean Systems alongside other investors including the Ecosystem Integrity Fund and Export Development Canada. The company is using this capital to expand its commercial sales and market share, while keeping its headquarter and innovations in B.C. In addition to the potential for financial returns, this investment aligns with our impact objectives to innovate for the future and drive climate action.
