InBC supported B.C. founders and engaged with local and global investors leading up to and during the conference. Here were some of our highlights.

Supporting Women Founders

InBC was pleased to support Vancouver Entrepreneur Forum’s Road to Web Summit Women in Tech and Impact Pitch Showcase, helping women founders in B.C. hone their pitches as they prepare to network and sell at one of the largest global tech conferences. This event was also supported by Innovation UBC and NorthX.

Our Senior Investment Associate, Shivani Chitroda, sat on the jury panel as top women ventures practiced their pitch to a live audience of 200+ people. We later proudly watched these ventures showcase and pitch at Web Summit, including Jointly who took home the BC Founder Faceoff prize at the BC Pavilion, and Cura who won the official Web Summit PITCH Finale on Centre Stage.

Convening Canadian Climate Capital

InBC also supported the inaugural Canadian Climate Capital Summit, welcoming local, national and global climate capital providers to B.C. Over 200 capital providers, plus B.C. founders and climate supporters gathered to collaborate, network and strengthen climate investing in B.C. and Canada.

This event was presented by five of the most active climate capital providers in B.C.: NorthX, Pangaea Ventures, Renewal Funds, and InBC portfolio funds Active Impact Investments and Evok Innovations, with support from InBC and other partners.

Showcasing B.C.’s Most Investible Ventures

We supported Innovate BC’s Investor Showcase featuring B.C.’s 25 Most Investible Ventures. This included curating investor invites, welcoming local and global investors to a showcase of some of the most promising B.C. startups. This exclusive event, hosted by Microsoft Vancouver, had B.C.’s investment-ready ventures, including our portfolio companies 4AG Robotics, Aquaeye, Arca Climate and ChopValue, pitching to a 200+ global audience.

Kicking Off with Pre-Web Summit Networking

We kicked off the conference with a pre-Web Summit evening of networking, a by-invite event hosted by Trade and Invest BC, Lawson Lundell, MNP and Remitly, with support from InBC, Invest Vancouver and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA).

Nearly 350 attendees, including investors, founders and innovation supporters enjoyed an evening of networking, with opening remarks from the Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth, Honourable Ravi Kahlon.

Bridging Canadian-Korea Startup Relations

Our Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Thomas Park, gave a keynote presentation at the Korea Global Startup Bridge Conference, presented by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), a government agency of the Republic of Korea, with support from Trade and Invest BC, SFU VentureLabs, Lawson Lundell and The Way Company.

Thomas shared insights on the state of venture capital in B.C. and Canada and the investing opportunities here. We are pleased to support bridging B.C.’s exciting innovation ecosystem with global trade partners and investors.

Announcing the SFU Innovates Venture Fund

InBC and SFU announced the SFU Innovates Venture Fund with a press conference at Web Summit, with remarks from the Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth, Honourable Ravi Kahlon, and SFU spinoff and InBC invested company Photonic Inc.

The SFU Innovates Venture Fund will invest in innovative B.C. companies based on technology developed by SFU researchers, students and alumni.

Sharing Fundraising Tips at the Climate Innovation Zone

Our CIO Thomas Park sat on a speaker panel at the Climate Innovation Zone on the Web Summit exhibition floor, alongside Pangaea Ventures, Grantham Foundation and NorthX.

Together, they shared their thoughts on the current fundraising environment for climate companies and tips on how to stand out to investors.

The Climate Innovation Zone at Web Summit is presented by NorthX, Foresight Canada, Alacrity Canada, Innovation UBC and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Also at the Climate Innovation Zone, we watched our portfolio company Svante named Scaleup Venture of the Year in Foresight Canada’s 2026 Canadian Cleantech Awards.

Meeting Many Founders, Investors and Innovation Supporters

Lastly, our team was running around both at the conference and numerous community-run side events engaging with founders, investors and innovation supporters. Thank you to all those who engaged with us; we enjoyed learning more about your work, and sharing more about how InBC supports the growth of B.C. companies.

Web Summit is coming back to Vancouver for another year. We look forward to breaking more attendance records, showcasing more B.C. ventures and bringing more investment to the province. See you in 2027.

InBC participated in Web Summit as part of our commitment to supporting inclusive economic growth by investing in missions-aligned businesses and strengthening B.C.’s presence on the international stage.

Throughout the conference, we enjoyed getting to know the many B.C. entrepreneurs and companies that are turning groundbreaking ideas into innovative solutions. We also engaged with investors both from within Canada and across the world who are keen to invest in B.C.

Here were some highlights:

Showcasing B.C. Businesses to Investors

InBC was proud to be a partner in the Innovation and Investment Insider Tours that invited national and global investors to gain insight into the innovation and investment opportunities in B.C. The day before the conference, investors from Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Uruguay and many other countries visited leading companies in the life sciences, cleantech and creative tech sectors across the Metro Vancouver region.

The tours kicked off with a welcome luncheon hosted by the City of Surrey, where we heard from Svante, Healthtech Connex, Clio and Fujitsu on all the great reasons they decided to build in B.C. Also at the luncheon was a showcase of exciting B.C. startups, such as VodaSafe, which is saving lives with its sonar water rescue technology, and CereCura, a biotech company developing drugs for brain diseases, to name a few.

Three sector-specific bus tours of over 150 investors, plus trade commissioners, media and innovation supporters made stops at high-growth companies such as AbCellera, Gandeeva and Kardium, representing B.C.ʼs fast-growing life sciences sector; and Arca, Hydron and pH7, at the forefront of B.C.ʼs climate leadership; as well as creative tech companies such as Industrial Light & Magic and Kabam demonstrating why B.C. is known as entertainment North.

Receptions hosted by SFU VentureLabs and NorthX provided additional room for investors to meet even more B.C. startups that are working on innovative solutions to real-world problems.

The innovation ecosystem — including partners Invest Vancouver (lead), AinBC, DigiBC, InBC, Innovation UBC, Invest Surrey, Life Sciences BC, the Naturally Innovative Alliance, NorthX and SFU VentureLabs — collaborated to make this event possible, enabling investors to witness first-hand the immense talent and exciting innovations taking place in B.C., and promoting our province as a destination for business and investment

Moderating a Speaker Panel at the B.C. Pavilion

InBC organized a speaker panel for the British Columbia Pavilion on the Web Summit floor. Moderated by our CEO Jill Earthy, we heard from a well-rounded panel representing industry, venture capital and academia on how “How Strategic Investments are Propelling Life Sciences in B.C.”

We thank panelists David de Graaf, CEO and Co-founder of Reverb Therapeutics; Allison Gaw, Principal at Amplitude Ventures; and Dr. Stephanie Willerth, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Victoria and CEO and Founder of Axolotl Biosciences, for sharing their experiences and insights on how we can continue propelling the life sciences sector in B.C.

Key highlights:

• Government support such as the B.C. Life Sciences and Biomanufacturing Strategy, InBC and the Integrated Marketplace have played an integral role to the sector growth in B.C.
• Strong academic and research institutions — from the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering to St. Paul’s Hospital’s Clinical Support & Research Centre — have created an environment where top talent thrives in B.C.
• B.C.’s life sciences ecosystem has a supportive and collaborative spirit, a strength that contributes to the world-class research and innovation taking place in the province.  
• We have the talent, the lab and research space and the will. B.C.’s life sciences sector is at a pivotal moment, growing quickly and becoming globally recognized, and strategic investments, with public and private sector support, can all work together to keep this momentum going.

Judging Life Sciences Startup Pitches

InBC’s CEO Jill Earthy also served as a judge for the Life Sciences BC Pitch Competition at the B.C. Pavilion. We congratulate Arbutus Medical and VoxCell BioInnovation for their winning pitches, as well as all the B.C. life sciences companies that participated. It is exciting to see all the life sciences innovations emerging out of British Columbia.

Cheering on InBC Portfolio Companies

We were proud to see the companies in our portfolio showcased at Web Summit and were pleased to refer some of these opportunities to them. From seeing 4AG Robotics, Arca Climate Technologies and Novarc Technologies demonstrating their products on the exhibit floor, to hearing Aspect Biosystems, Svante, ThoughtExchange and Evok Innovations speak on stage, and watching VodaSafe win the audience vote at the final pitch competition, we were cheering them on from the audience.

Engaging with Entrepreneurs and Investors

All week long, members of our investment team were scattered both across the conference and at various community-run side events across the city meeting with entrepreneurs and investors. From Indigenous Tech Circle’s Pre-Web Summit Gathering to Innovation UBC’s Mining & Critical Minerals Reception, we met with impactful founders, investors and leaders from across B.C.

The inaugural Web Summit conference in Vancouver welcomed 15,727 attendees, including 1,108 startups — 44% of which were women-founded — and 681 investors from across the world. Throughout the conference, we enjoyed meeting with numerous entrepreneurs and getting to know all the innovations happening in British Columbia. We also engaged with investors and other organizations advancing innovation in our province. 

Meeting Entrepreneurs on the Expo Floor 

InBC hosted a booth on the expo floor where entrepreneurs, investors and innovation ecosystem developers could visit to learn more about how we are investing in companies with strong connections to B.C. Companies were also able to register in advance for one-on-one meetings with members of our investment team.

Judging the Grizzly Pursuit Pitch Finale 

Throughout the conference we watched startup companies pitch in the Grizzly Pursuit competition presented by National Bank and MaRS, for a chance to advance to the finale.  

Our CIO, Leah Nguyen, sat on the judging panel of the Grizzly Pursuit Finale alongside Chris Neumann, General Partner of Panache Ventures, Marvin Liao, Partner of Diaspora Ventures, Omi Velasco, Principal of Graphite Ventures and Wade Preston, Director of Tech & Innovation Banking of National Bank of Canada.  

The finalists Autograph Analytics, ecologicca, elai.io, Eureka DevSecOps, happly.ai and Verano.AI did great jobs sharing their business visions on the main stage in front of a large audience.  

Following a short deliberation, the judges advanced the final two, happly.ai and Verano.AI, for conference attendees to vote on the winner. Congratulations to happly.ai for presenting a winning pitch and walking away with the $20,000 cash prize. We also applaud all the finalists and companies that participated.  

Moderating the RBCx Investor Breakfast 

Our CEO, Jill Earthy, moderated the RBCx Investor Breakfast, co-sponsored by VoPay and Polymath. We heard from an engaging panel including Sid Paquette, Head of RBCx, Boris Wertz, Founder and General Partner of Version One Ventures, and Lindsay Smylie, Director of Alberta Plug and Play Tech Center, as they discussed the investment landscape, funding strategies, market trends and predictions for technology and innovation in North America. 

Key takeaways and predictions: 

• The market will continue to be slow this year with smaller average deal sizes but capital will flow, and there are early signs of more potential exit opportunities  
• There will be continued focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and cleantech, with recognition that we need filter through the hype of AI versus its real-world practical applications
